Review : Battle : Los Angeles

The gang caught the last full show of this movie tonight. It has actually been a while since all of us (the ones in Bacolod anyway) have gone to see a movie together.  Dinner, fun conversation and a movie is always a great idea with friends.

Let me preface this post by describing what the movie is like. It’s a cross between Independence Day and Black Hawk Down, wherein a platoon is trapped inside enemy lines who happen to be bad aliens. And if Julius had to describe it, he’d say it was shot like you were playing Counterstrike. :)

I like that the movie was pretty fast paced and you aren’t really left with a lot of unnecessary scenes. For a 2-hour movie, it actually felt longer. To start it all with more or less cuts of “these are your cast of characters” and then straight into the invasion was a good move. As per usual, there were some dialogue I could have gone without. “You’re my little marine now” … WHAT? Were we the only ones who felt disturbed by that scene? I’m pretty sure Aaron Eckhart tried to argue to have that line changed and failed miserably.

You have to give the film credit for minimizing all the drama bits and maximizing all the ‘pew pew’ ones. I think that’s what worked for the movie. This is supposed to be a battle; let’s not deal with your emotional baggage and just shoot and blow things up! Although sometimes the weight of Aaron Eckhart’s mistake on a previous mission just follows him all through out the film and can sometimes cause you to “roll eyes”.

At the end of the day though, this movie is certainly more entertaining than the other “alien invasion” movies that have recently come out. The special effects were good and the action scenes even better. It also gets points for not employing too much of the “shaky camera” … some, but not too much.

Review : I am Number Four

Vicky and I haven’t gone to see a movie for quite some time and decided that tonight (or earlier rather) was time enough. Sure, we wondered whether “I am Number Four” was a good enough movie to spend money on but seeing as we didn’t have any other choice (nothing looked more interesting than this) and we just really wanted to go out, we went for it.

The premise of the story is pretty interesting although I was left asking exactly how they were supposed to “protect” or “fight” for their planet. Sure, their planet’s lost now and now they have to protect Earth and all that but a little more insight into their race and history and a bit more about their nemesis would have been nice.  And how did those bad guys travel from one place to another without anybody even asking why they looked so strange? Don’t tell me no policemen stopped them to ask what that growling thing in container was? While we’re asking questions … how did Sam get “John”‘s mobile number?  Why did Marshal Givens have to die? I pick at the smallest thing. Read more >>

On the Telly : 09/5 to 09/11

Sep 12, 2010   //   by wurlocke   //   Journal, Media, Ramblings  //  No Comments

September has rolled in and most of the television shows I watch premieres this week or the upcoming weeks. In addition to the new shows I started watching a couple of months back, Law and Order UK and Merlin start up again this week. Here’s how the week in television went :

Rizzoli and Isles

1.09 – The Beast in Me The death of a young man, leads to Dr. Isles finding out more about her biological father, who is not what she expected him to be.

Rating: 4.5/5. I am loving and loving this series every time they air a new episode. The cast dynamic is great and the character interaction is just so good. I love the banter between Jane and Maura as well as that of Jane’s family. And speaking of bonds, this week’s episode showcases Maura’s family. Discovering that the victim of their current case turns out to be Maura’s half-brother and the revelation that her real father was one of the most wanted leader of an Irish mob was really interesting. To end the episode with Jane and her team allowing Maura’s father to kill the person who murdered his son for revenge and to protect Maura was a really good twist to the plot.
